Hommage to Wim Statius Muller – Joop Halman – text. Alexander Kraft van Ermel, Armand Simon and Marcel Worms – piano / Imara Thomas – soprano
In 2019 pianist and composer Wim Statius Muller passed away. His compositions and piano playing gave him a nickname: ‘the Chopin of Curaçao’. When Statius Muller died in 2019 he left behind a considerable number of unpublished compositions. A selection of these works will be played at this concertlecture
Joop Halman is president of the Palm Music Foundation and an expert on Antillian music and its history. Alexander Kraft van Ermel, born and raised on Curaçao, is a grandson of Wim Statius Muller, received his first pianolessons from his grandfather and performed his works on a large scale. Armand Simon is a son of Aruban parents, studied in the Netherlands with Mila Baslawskaja and Alan Weiss and thereafter has been living on Aruba for many years, contributing to the development of musical education on the island. Soprano Imara Thomas has Aruban roots as well. She studied at the Opera Academy in Maastricht and has been a singer at the Düsseldorf Opera House for many years. Marcel Worms visited Statius Muller before recording his CD Danzas Caribeñas te rade bij Wim Statius Muller en played his music on Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire.
